Description

It is simply impossible to become a great supervisor without being a great communicator.  As a construction supervisor you must get work done through other people and you spend a significant amount of time each day in some type of interpersonal situation, therefore the ability to communicate effectively is a critical element to your success. A large number of performance problems and conflict occur as a result of poor communications. It is precisely this reason that underscores the need for supervisors to focus on becoming great communicators.

This course focuses on developing strong and clear communication strategies that will help you improve your listening, your message and your delivery.  You will explore powerful active listening techniques, the value of non-verbal communications, how to deliver your message with impact to get the results you want, how to provide constructive feedback to your employees and what pitfalls to avoid, negotiation strategies that result in a win-win outcome and the basics of written communication in construction. The course will wrap-up with a review of common communication blunders and potential barriers to communication success.

Speaker

Josée Larocque-Patton, HR ICU

Josée is not your typical HR professional — and that’s exactly the point.

With more than 25 years of Human Resources experience, Josée has built her career around solving problems, navigating the uncomfortable stuff, and helping leaders deal with the people issues that don’t come with an instruction manual. From HR emergencies and crisis management to employee relations, performance challenges and building stronger workplaces, she’s known for bringing a practical, straightforward approach to HR.

Her HR career started far from the traditional office — on the water with Celebrity Cruise Lines and Disney Cruise Lines, eventually taking her to the Bahamas. After returning to Ontario, she spent more than a decade with Canada’s largest pharmaceutical company, gaining extensive experience in complex, fast-paced organizations.

Today, Josée is the trusted “go-to” HR partner for a variety on Construction Clients throughout Canada.

She later launched The HR ICU, her own HR consulting firm, with one goal: to give small and medium-sized businesses access to experienced HR support without needing a full-time HR department. She works alongside owners and leaders on everything from mergers and acquisitions, employment agreements and hiring to policies, employee handbooks, Health & Safety, AODA, employee engagement, workplace issues and performance management.

In other words, when something involves people, Josée is usually somewhere in the middle of it — figuring it out.

She is also the author of Navigating HR – Simple Tips for People Leaders, available on Amazon,  was member of the Forbes Business Council, and a contributor to Forbes.com.

Josée believes HR doesn’t need to be complicated, overly corporate or buried in red tape. It needs to be practical, human and useful — because great HR isn’t about managing paperwork.

It’s about making HR simpler so leaders can spend less time navigating HR and more time leading and enjoying their people.
